🏈 Hello, thank you for reading A Helpful Thing! This is the FIFTH edition, so be sure to read until the end for an interesting fact involving the number 5! 🏈
Per this incredibly official flowchart, to land your message, you must connect with the audience in some way. A great way to do that is to find current, interesting topics that you can weave into your presentation.
Here are some relevant topics for February 2025:
Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Show
SNL officially made it to the big 5-0, an impressive feat. Hats off to Lorne and the gang! Here are some themes/topics this could tie into:
Custom experiences - Every week that SNL has a new show, they start entirely from scratch on Monday of that week. Why? Because each week’s show needs to be custom fit for the guest host as well as the political climate and current events.
Building a strong brand - There are so many iconic elements about SNL that have remained constant through the years and solidified it as a cultural institution. One of my personal favorites is that every time the audience sees the backstage they see a live llama, a showgirl, and a guy dressed as Abraham Lincoln.
Super Bowl LIX
The Super Bowl happens every February! And even for people who don’t like football, it can still be fun as it brings food, entertaining ads and now pictures of Taylor Swift hugging her friends. It’s got everything! Here are some themes/topics this could tie into:
Attention to Detail - One of the teams in the Super Bowl this year (The Eagles) lived by this mantra this season: Tough, detailed, together. Read more about it here.
Efficiency - There is arguably no greater masterclass on efficiency than the setup of the Super Bowl halftime show. The setting up of a regular stadium concert usually takes 1-2 days. For The Super Bowl they are given a mere 6 minutes - crazy 🫨🫨🫨!
Hurkle Durkling
Seeing as February is the dead of winter, it’s the perfect time for Hurkle Durkling, a Scottish term that means to stay in bed longer than you should. Here are some themes/topics this could tie into:
Universal broad appeal - While this trend originated in Scotland, based on how viral it went on Tik Tok, clearly, it has universal appeal.
Weird Scottish stuff - Ok, your presentation probably isn’t about weird Scottish stuff, but maybe it should be?? Lots to work with here!
AS PROMISED…..an interesting fact involving the number 5: According to Esquire, these are the top 5 SNL sketches of all time: 5) Celebrity Jeopardy 4) Word Association 3) More Cowbell 2) Matt Foley: Van Down by the River, 1) Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer.
Did you love this edition so much you had to lie down and put a towel over your head? I’m flattered! Want to tell your friends? Well, guess what? You can!
